A finished tattoo will be wiped clean and a thin layer of ointment, (Vaseline/A&D) is applied to keep the tattoo moist and allow for weeping. A non-stick bandage covers the area and is then sealed with medical tape. This bandage should be kept on for a minimum of five hours, although each artist will have a slightly different method of aftercare which they will go over with you at the end of your tattoo. Once its time to remove the bandage you will need to wash the tattooed area with hot water, soap, and your hand (no cloths) this will get rid of any and all ointment, ink, or fluid on or around the tattoo. Several cleanings over the first couple of days may be required as well as applying a skin lotion or ointment to relieve itchiness or dryness. Tattoos heal similar to sunburns in that they will dry out and flake. This flaking or scabbing will last a few days and its dryness and itchiness can be eased through the use the lotion or ointment. Again, your artist will give you more detailed aftercare specific to your work this is simply a general overview of aftercare.

It is strongly recommended you do not swim or soak the tattoo for a week and no sunlight on the area for a minimum of 3 weeks.

A healed tattoo should always be covered with sunscreen to help keep them looking their best.
